Course Outline

You will learn the basics of cyber security in this IPEI course. You will also learn about common cyber risks like malware and phishing and how to use network security tools like firewalls and VPNs to protect your data. You'll learn about cryptography and risk management, and you'll also get to protect yourself against real-life cyberattacks.

Month 1: Networking Basics (Cisco Packet Tracer Based)

  • Switching & Routing Basics
  • VLANs, Trunking, STP
  • IP Addressing (Static & DHCP)
  • Basic Routing (RIP, OSPF Intro)
  • Network Security Concepts (Firewall, ACLs)

Tools: Cisco Packet Tracer (hands-on labs)

Tasks:

  • Configure 3 PCs with static IPs and test connectivity
  • Build a network with 1 switch, 2 routers, and 4 PCs
  • Configure VLANs and inter-VLAN routing
  • Simulate a DHCP server in Packet Tracer
  • Apply ACLs to restrict access for a PC

Month 2: Linux Essentials (LPIC-1 Based)

  • Linux File System & Permissions
  • Shell Commands & Bash Scripting
  • Package Management (APT, YUM)
  • User & Group Management
  • Networking in Linux
  • System Boot Process & Logging

Tools: VirtualBox/VMware, Ubuntu Server, Kali Linux

Tasks:

  • Create users & groups with custom permissions
  • Write a shell script to automate user creation
  • Configure static IP on a Linux machine

Month 3: Ethical Hacking (CEH v12 Topics)

  • Footprinting & Reconnaissance
  • Scanning Networks (Nmap, Netdiscover)
  • Enumeration Techniques (SMB, SNMP, LDAP)
  • Sniffing & Traffic Analysis (Wireshark)
  • Vulnerability Scanning (Nessus/OpenVAS)
  • Tools: Kali Linux, Nmap, Wireshark, Hydra, Metasploit, Burp Suite

Tasks:

  • Perform an Nmap scan on a target machine
  • Enumerate SMB shares and extract data
  • Crack a password using John the Ripper
  • Exploit a vulnerable service via Metasploit
  • Document and submit a penetration test report

Month 4: Microsoft Windows Server (MCSA-Based)

  • Installing & Configuring Windows Server
  • Active Directory Domain Services (ADDS)
  • Group Policy Objects (GPOs)
  • DHCP & DNS Configuration
  • File Sharing & NTFS Permissions
  • Managing Users & Organizational Units

Tools: Windows Server 2019/2022 VM, Active Directory Lab Setup

  • Setup AD Domain Controller & join clients
  • Create users & assign permissions via GPO
  • Configure DNS & DHCP on Windows Server
  • Automate user creation with PowerShell

Month 5: Microsoft Azure (Cloud Security Basics)

  • Create a Virtual Machine in Azure
  • Configure NSG to allow only SSH or RDP
  • Add users to Azure AD with RBAC

Month 6: Final Project & Assessment Final Project Options (Choose One)

Build & Attack a Lab Network

  • Setup: 2 Linux VMs, 1 Windows VM, 1 Attacker VM
  • Perform scanning, enumeration, exploitation
  • Document results in a penetration test report

Secure Windows + Linux Hybrid Network

  • Implement Active Directory (AD)
  • Configure firewall and Group Policy Objects (GPOs)
  • Manage permissions and user accounts
  • Setup Azure backups for recovery

Azure Cloud Security Demo

  • Create and configure a Virtual Machine in Azure
  • Apply Network Security Groups (NSG)
  • Enable Microsoft Defender for Cloud
  • Configure Identity & Access Management (IAM)
  • Setup monitoring and alerts

Final Submission Includes:

  • Project documentation
  • Demonstration of lab setup (optional)
  • Written report with screenshots
